Which test versions count
- IELTS: only General Training. IELTS Academic and the One Skill Retake are not accepted.
- CELPIP: only CELPIP-General.
- PTE: only PTE Core, not PTE Academic.
- TEF Canada: results show two columns, Score / 699 and Équivalence ancien score. Pick the converter option that names the column you copy from; IRCC publishes a table for each.
- TCF Canada: listening and reading are scored up to 699, writing and speaking from 4 to 20.
- If you took both an English and a French test, Ontario scores the test with the higher CLB level.
Tables from IRCC’s Express Entry language test page and its Score / 699 TEF table, checked on 2026-11-05. OWP Stream rules from ontario.ca.
CLB questions
How is my overall CLB level worked out?
Each of your four abilities (listening, reading, writing, speaking) converts to its own CLB level. Your overall level is the lowest of the four, so one weaker ability sets it.
Which TEF Canada score column should I use?
Either, as long as you pick the matching option here. TEF Canada results list a Score / 699 column and an Équivalence ancien score column, and IRCC publishes a conversion table for each. Mixing them (typing one column into the other table) gives the wrong level. If you are nominated through Express Entry, IRCC asks you to enter the Équivalence ancien score column in your Express Entry profile.
What CLB level do I need for the OINP?
For the Ontario Workforce Priority Stream it depends on the job offer: CLB 6 in all four abilities for TEER 0 to 3 (CLB 5 for listed skilled trades) and CLB 4 for TEER 4 and 5. TEER 0 to 3 applicants who recently graduated from an eligible Ontario institution with a qualifying credential need no test. Points start at CLB 6 for your first official language.
Does CLB 10 score more than CLB 9 in the OWP Stream?
No. The first-language factor tops out at CLB 9 or higher, so CLB 9 and CLB 10 earn the same points. See every factor on the scoring factors page.
